This giveway is over. To see who won, read Diet Tips Giveaway Winner. Check back often – there are more contests to come. And while you are here, take a look around!
The holidays are over so it’s “back to life, back to reality” as the song says. For most of us that means catching up on everything we let slide during December, trying to organize our lives, making a good faith attempt at upholding our New Year’s resolutions.
And dieting.
Whether you just want to lose those holiday pounds or are getting back to your lifelong struggle (along with me and Oprah), it’s time for cutting back, watching what we eat, and enjoying the success.
In 2007, I lost 52 pounds. I used the South Beach Diet and enjoyed it. It suited me then.
If you’ve read my blog before, you probably know that I used ballroom dancing for my exercise. It’s an excellent choice for couples. For singles, I recommend line dancing. The most important element is to choose something you really enjoy – something you look forward to – something that makes the time pass faster rather than drag on. Unless you have extreme willpower, that’s the only kind of exercise that you will do consistently.
In 2008, I gained 30 pounds back. Starting a new business is exciting and stressful. And, for me, it meant long days, often sitting at my computer. I grabbed whatever food was available. I made one feeble attempt to get back on South Beach, but my heart wasn’t in it.
So it’s time to dust off all of my best dieting techniques and get back into the saddle again. But let’s make it fun for everyone and have a contest. Who’s interested?
This is a “diet tips” contest, so you will be sharing your very best diet tip with us. This tip should be something you’ve personally tried. If you all start saying “drink more water” like they do at Weight Watchers meetings when they can’t think of something, I’m going to delete your entry! Really think about it. Add something that no one has mentioned. Let’s make this useful for everyone.
If you’ve never dieted before and have no tips to share, do not despair. There will be ways for you to enter, too.
Let me start with one of my favorite diet tips: Food presentation is extremely important. Use a cloth napkin, bring out the fancy dessert cups, serve your water in a stem, garnish, arrange your food attractively, and put a flower on the table. Add some favorite music to the scene and really enjoy your meal. Although you probably cannot swing this for every meal, use this technique a lot in the beginning, when you are feeling deprived, for special occasions, and when your resolve weakens.
Okay, so here are the contest details:
PRIZE: Set of 8 cobalt blue cosmopolitan glasses by Libbey, value $39.92 plus we pay the shipping OR a set of 4 cobalt blue glass dessert cups in the Trellis pattern by LE Smith Glass Co., value $45.96 plus we pay the shipping.
WHO CAN ENTER: US residents of the lower 48 states aged 18 and older. Sorry Sis, but my family members are not eligible.
DEADLINE: Wednesday, January 7, 2009, 11:59 p.m., Eastern Standard Time
HOW THE WINNER WILL BE PICKED: A random number generator will be used. The comment that corresponds to the number will be the winner. The winner will have 48 hours to respond to my email or the post on the blog. If the winner does not respond, another winner will be chosen.

We use lunch size plates for our meals, and our dinner plates are meant for platter type stuff.
Thank you for this opportunity!

I eat slowly. Then I know when I’m full and stop eating.

I’ve basically eliminated drinking all sodas and when eating at restaurants I order water. This also saves money too because water is free! Thanks.

Round out each meal with large servings of freebie vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and all kinds of salad vegetables.
They’re good for you, they don’t contain any empty calories and they help to keep you feeling fuller, longer.

I decide upon a diet and go to the grocery store with a list. I plan ahead to never run out of what I am allowed to eat. I check the diet and decide on the foods it includes that I like the best. Try to find something filling that is low calorie.

What I find really works is if I don’t eat after 6 or 7 in the evening. Somehow it helps me to control my eating during the day also!

January 2nd, 2009 at 6:27 pm
Fill up on water before any meal it makes you eat less. Eat smaller portions use kids plates they are smaller so you cannot fill them up as much as the adult plates.
January 2nd, 2009 at 6:28 pm
keep a food journal
January 2nd, 2009 at 6:49 pm
Sit down to eat. Sounds so cliche, I know, but I’m HORRIBLE about eating wherever I am or on the run. To make a conscious decision about where and what you eat makes you much more aware of the food you consume.

We drink 8 ounces of water 15 minutes prior to eating and then have only 1 serving of food.
January 2nd, 2009 at 7:52 pm
My favorite tip has always been to use your smaller luncheon plates as your dinner plate. I’m not sure what the corellation is between your eyes and your stomach, but it really does make you feel like youhave eaten a lot more than you have! Also, if you need a little extra boost, drink a full glass of water 30 minutes before eating!!
January 2nd, 2009 at 7:54 pm
I try to eat only half of what is on my plate. Then I save the other half to eat a few hours later. Smaller portions more often…
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:01 pm
Apple Cider Vinegar followed by a liberal rinsing with water since the acetic acid can break down tooth enamel.
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:15 pm
Seriously- to help all learn control I set the table and prepour the cereal so there is a serving appropriate for people. For dinner I serve my husband vegetables first and lots of beans- or grains- and let each settle- silly I know but we work at home 24/7 so food is always in sight so knowing portions and also learning to say no to food works well these day. I have gotten him to ask for celery with a light pb on it for a sweet snack when he used to want a carton of ice cream with fudge- he is readjusting his thinking, eating slow and asking himself, am I hungry or am I bored and just want soemthing to pop in my mouth.
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:29 pm
I eat my salad after the main course. The vinegar and oil dressing has no sugar and somehow finishing off the meal with the vinegar/oil taste leaves me filled and stops any craving for a sweet dessert. This really works best if the portions are controlled on the main course, of course.
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:39 pm

My favorite diet tip is to drink LOTS of water throughout the day.
Thanks and Happy 2009!
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:29 pm
This doesn’t work for my husband, but I can manage it:
Try getting satisfaction from one cookie. Ever eaten one of those 100 calorie packs and loved it? See how they drag out the experience by making the cookies tiny? Break your cookie up and drag it out.
Look, if you don’t have decent self control, don’t try this. You only lose if you eat the whole bag. But if you can, it’s a great reward.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:31 pm
don’t eat anything after 6pm
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:32 pm
My favorite diet tip…is not to diet! you should be making lifestyle changes, not changes for a certain period of time!
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:32 pm
I learned this on a tv show. Put down your fork between each bite. You won’t believe how much quicker you fill up.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:34 pm
6 small meals a day that contain a lean protein and low carb vegetable.
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:49 pm

January 2nd, 2009 at 9:51 pm
I just signed up for your monthly newsletter. I love crunch anything crunchy makes me smile. While dieting I suck and crunch on ice chips. Makes my mouth happy and my waistline shrink. Plus it is good for me. Instead of asking for water at a restaurant I ask for ice chips. Thanks!
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:54 pm
eat slow
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:01 pm
I limit myself to one carb per day, proteins, fruits, and veggies, nuts, and lots of H2O. I’ve allowed myself 1 year to reach my weight goal.
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:53 pm
I lost 80+ pounds once over about six months time with Billy Blanks Tae Bo dvds and cutting out sweets… all those kicks and punches, whoohoo. Exciting.
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:54 pm
Here’s the tip that I’ve found – make sure you put your fork (or spoon) down on your plate between bites. It’s really easy for us to keep that utensil in our hands! Putting it down is hard!
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:55 pm
I do not believe in diets, they never worked for me. I lost and gained back more because I felt starved. Finally three decades ago, I changed my eating habits. I ignore sweets, eat in moderation, drink plenty of water, and most importantly – exercise daily! I have never gained weight again.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:00 pm
I eat a piece of fruit 20 minutes before the meal. I also remember portion sizes for meat (a deck of cards).
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:24 pm
Take it one day at a time, and make the best choice at the moment, we are often on the run and must eat that way so when you are ordering out simply pick the best food you can. Don’t forget you can ask for things on the side or cooked to order. Keep a journal, when you look back you may be surprised at what you’ve really eaten. Make it pretty, when fixing food at home make the place you are eating attractive and treat the food like it is a special occassion, you will feel more satisfied.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:34 pm
I have no secrets. I wish I did. I eat everything.

Diet Tips:
Excercise is like any routine or pattern it will become boring/routine, mix it up! If you like dancing, your night out at the club is definitely burining calories (now cocktails are empty calories so you may just be evening things out) but pop in a belly dancing DVD one week, salsa the next etc. And don’t forget, housework burns calories, gardening burns calories…
Get your 8 and 8. 8 Glasses of water, and 8 hours of sleep!
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:23 am
Drinking water – eight glasses per day, atleast!
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:34 am
Cut back on hidden fats….
use less mayo (better yet no mayo, mustard is great instead), substitute apple sauce for oil in baking (cakes & brownies), or use apple/grape juice to de-glaze a pan and make a quick sauce for the meat.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:49 am
walk
whenever possible
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:00 am
Depending on your age, level of conditioning, and your fitness goals, you should train in a particular heart-rate zone. Beginners should try to elevate their heart rate to 50%-60% of their maximum while intermediates and advanced should shoot for 70%-85% of their max. The higher your heart rate, the more calories you will burn and the more fit you can become. To figure your maximum heart rate, simply subtract your age from 220. For example, if you’re 30 years old, you would have a maximum heart rate of 190. To work at 70% of your maximum heart rate, you would shoot for a heart rate of approximately 133 beats per minute (0.7 x 190). You can also count bpm (beats per minute) in 10-second increments and then multiply by six.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:35 am
Use Truvia natural sweetener instead of sugar. Always take a list to the grocery store and buy only what is on the list.
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:44 am
stay hydrated in other words drink water, frequently when we eat and aren’t hungry its because of thirst
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:51 am
I put the candy on a very high shelf. A: it’s out of sight. B: if I do eat it, at least I have to work to get it.
January 3rd, 2009 at 2:12 am
Eating breakfast helps to get the metabolism going to burn up extra calories! I usually eat a healthy breakfast.
cjnedrow@gmail.com
January 3rd, 2009 at 2:12 am
Slowing down your eating gives your body a chance to tell you you’re full, so put down the sandwich, fork or spoon between bites, chew each bite 20 times, and take a sip of water before you pick up your food or utensil again. I really like water, as long as it’s cold with plenty of ice, and usually have it plain, but if you don’t enjoy water, try it with a squeeze of lemon or lime.

January 3rd, 2009 at 7:14 am
Pass on the pie and feed your sweet tooth with (chocolate)pudding, a teaspoon coolwhip and graham crackers sprinkled on top.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:44 am
I find that when I am living life in balance, I eat 6 small healthy meals instead of the traditional 3. That way, I am never ravenous enough to eat out of control and my blood sugar levels are more consistent.
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:58 am
Start every day off with a healthy breakfast. This really is key.
January 3rd, 2009 at 8:21 am
Number one rule– SLOW DOWN AND TASTE THE FOOD. You’ll eat less and enjoy it more.

Today’s dishes are oversized and if you put a normal portion size on them it’ll look like you’re depriving yourself. Instead, use smaller vintage plates, luncheon plates if your set came with them, or salad/dessert plates (which won’t fool the brain as well since they look so much smaller than the usual plate, but it’s better than nothing).

I eat 4 balanced meals every day including some kind of whole grain. The key to sticking with a healthy eating plan is to keep your blood sugar stable. I work out 4 or 5 days per week for at least an hour. Keeping your heartrate between 115 and 125 will burn fat not protein, so relatively slow and steady is the way to losing fat. I do not own a scale and don’t believe in them. We all should be more concerned about body fat ratio, not what the scale says. Women should take up weight lifting also. You will replace body fat with muscle and look toned and fit and preserve your bones. And, yes, lots of water.

Fave diet tip: eat what I like, just not after 7 p.m., and I lost weight, but don’t feel like lose out on eating my favorite foods.

Be a label reader… If you do not know what an ingredient is, or what a process means (like hydrolized) – then DON’T EAT IT.
January 3rd, 2009 at 9:48 am
Eat meals at a table and with no distractions (tv, movie, reading) and put your utensil down between bites.
Thank you for the contest!

6 SMALL meals, rather than 3 large ones…..it keeps your metabolism up and running and burning calories…….also, eat your largest meal at noon rather than in the evening..that way, you’re not falling asleep on unburned calories.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:52 am
One of the ways I have lost wieght is by eating my goodies in the morning. I love sweets, so I figure eat them in the morning and I have all day to work them off.
I Love cookies so I have 2 with coffee every morning.
January 3rd, 2009 at 11:57 am
I place a item of clothing that I want to to fit into some place in the house where I will see it several times a day for a reminder.

my favorite diet tip is to drink a glass of water before my meal. I have also found that if I eat a salad before I eat dinner it fills me and I tend to eat less. And since salad is so good for me, I’m a happy person after! And by the way, I LOVE cobalt glass!
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:11 pm

When you think you can’t eat another bite, don’t!
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:25 pm
They’re both so pretty, but I’d get more use out of the desert cups. My favorite diet tip? Don’t deprive yourself and make a food off limits, you’ll only binge later. Allow yourself a small portion of the food that you’re desiring. Small portion being theh key words. Stay hydrated with water too! It will fill you up and often when you think that you’re hungry really your body is just thirsty!
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:38 pm
plan ahead and always plate it pretty
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:39 pm
I try to eat a lot of greens before eating the main meal.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Water is the key !!
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:20 pm
Make one of your daily meals vegan. That way, you get used to thinking of veggies as a main meal rather than just a side dish, and start to cook with them in more enjoyable and creative ways.

This is a healthy snack and I can eat a few throughout the day.
January 3rd, 2009 at 2:29 pm
I use a smaller dish when I plate my food, it looks like I’m having a full portion. Also, when I take a bite of food, I put my fork/spoon down, chew completely, then take a sip of water. It seems to work for me.
I love the cobalt blue dessert cups. Thanks.

I make the decision as soon as I wake up to get up and go to my workout classes. If I don’t feel like going I tell myself that if I start skipping now, it’ll be harder to get back into the routine. I also eat small portions, several of them throughout the day and cook meals from scratch.
January 3rd, 2009 at 5:43 pm
It sounds kinda silly, but I like to eat off of smaller plates. The plate looks full and therefore I feel like I have eaten a full-size meal, but the plate size actually limits my portion size.

January 3rd, 2009 at 6:43 pm
I find that presentation is important. So putting the proper amount of food on a plate or in a cup that looks pleasing. So the plate or cup cannot be too large or it will look like you are getting a skimpy portion. This is a beautiful prize and would help me continue my ‘presentation’ idea.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:44 pm
I find that if you don’t have snack foods that are bad for your diet in your house, you will eat less of them.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:59 pm

I serve the recommended portion size. If anybody wants more, they have to get up and get it themselves. We all eat a lot less that way
January 3rd, 2009 at 8:41 pm
My diet tip is to eat a Salad, then wait for 20 minutes after finishing the salad before eating your meal. It takes the brain about 20 minutes to realize you have eaten. That way you won’t feel as hungry when you eat your regular meal and you’ll eat less.
January 3rd, 2009 at 9:15 pm
I don’t deprive me of anything I really like. I just eat it in moderation.

January 4th, 2009 at 12:51 am

January 4th, 2009 at 1:55 am
The biggest diet tip I can give is to be sure to drink a full 8 ounce glass of water about 10 minutes prior to eating a meal.
It will make you feel full and you will eat less.
I also try to eat a bowl of oatmeal every day for breakfast. Not only does it get me going for my day but it gives me energy and helps my concentration.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:10 am
We all need exercise and we all need to watch how and what we eat. I have found that cutting back on sugar (I drink coffee w/sugar all day long) and walking was the ticket for me I lost 20 lbs in about 4 months and that was two years ago. I have managed to keep it off, with the holidays and all the food that goes along with them, I put on a few unwanted lbs., and I am trimming the fat as we speak. I also enjoy ballroom dancing and that really helps cause I do not like to go to the gym. We are one of the couples that go out with Laurie and her hubby. We dance at least twice a week. That is wonderful exercise for us…it gets the heart rate up and burns calories. One more tip Stay Off The Scales…I realized that jumping on the scales everyday was adding to my frustration cause I just didn’t seem to be lossing the weight fast enough to suit me. I decided that the I could win this race it just took some time.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:13 am
eating smaller amounts always works 4 me
January 4th, 2009 at 3:47 am

Thank you
January 4th, 2009 at 3:51 am
Stop eating about halfway through what you expect as a “full meal.” Wait about 10 minutes before you start up again. Often you will find you feel full by then.
January 4th, 2009 at 5:32 am
Hi
I love desserts so I eat a small one after dinner. By doing that the sugar is diluted by the dinner and you don’t feel the urge to keep on eating sweets.

January 4th, 2009 at 9:24 am
My favorite diet tip is to add fresh slices of lemon or orange to water and to save the caps of your bottles so you know how many you have swigged throughout the day
January 4th, 2009 at 9:28 am
I carried a small notebook with me and jotted down what I was eating throughout the day. It really allowed me to see when & what I was eating and helped me eliminate extra snacks by just slightly rescheduling my day. I found I often ate or drank something simply because that’s when my “break” was.
January 4th, 2009 at 9:41 am
Diet tip! Don’t eat everything you see!
January 4th, 2009 at 9:48 am

January 4th, 2009 at 11:24 am
my tip is to eat smaller meals 6 times a day and to cut out caffeinated drinks
January 4th, 2009 at 11:24 am
I lost a large amount of weight (and kept it off for a very long time-but that’s another story)) by cutting back on all processed foods, not eating starchs or sugar (which triggers the ‘hunger’ signal), and eating three large red delicious apples and one orange each day. I started my day by adding 2 tsps of real lemon juice to my cup of coffee and eating a boiled egg or an egg white omelet with asparagus. Seriously, I was NEVER hungry, ate lots of healthy foods – salads, fish, chicken, vegetables and fruit. The weight seemed to melt away.
A modified plan is to just eat at least one red delicious apple and one orange each day and cut back on processed foods. You will still get nice results, and feel so much better with more energy!

I find there are so many reduced and fat free and reduced and sugar free products on the market made by the major brands I always used that I can pretty much use the same brands only in the reduced types. These big companies put a lot of research into developing products that taste or almost taste as good as the originals. I use them whenever I find them. Secretly one item I have tried their reduced fat selections but never are able to come up to the original standards and which I will not compromise on is Hellman’s Mayonnaise. Although I do try to use less when using it I could not use anything else. I love their reduced fat salad dressings but not the mayo. I guess mayo is my chocolate. I bet there are a lot of folks out there with a secret love they can’t part with. Hee! Hee!

My best diet tip: Don’t Diet!
I lost 40 pounds 4 1/2 years ago by eating everything I like. I made lower calorie versions of my favorite food. I changed the way I cook and the way I order food out.
I left one day, Saturday to eat anything I wanted. The rule was I could not buy a whole cake or pie or bag of cookies. I had to buy and eat individual servings with a limit of two.
Sunday was fast food day, again I did not order any of the large sized meals.
I became a walker and worked my way up to one hour per day of fast walking.
It took 3 months to lose the 40 pounds and I have kept it off because I still follow what I did to lose.
I make better food choices and I am a fitness walker.
I still struggle with the last 10 pounds!!
Dieting is not the answer, a Change Of Lifestyle and Commitment is.

Diets usually fail without a support system. You need a buddy, a spouse on a diet, a best friend, a trainer, someone else to help you along the way.
January 4th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
Put your fork down between bites, this slows you down and gives your brain time to realise you have some food in your stomach
January 4th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
I make sure my house is well stocked with healthy foods & no junk food.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
Keep a food journal.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
This may sound goofy but it really helped me at night- use your DVR to fast forward through commercials. Somehow seeing those pizza delivery ads 7 times a night would convince me that I was hungry when I really wasn’t. I didn’t know how easily I was triggered by it until we got Tivo.

January 4th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
I crave sweets and snacks in the late evening. I try to satisfy that craving with a large cup of no fat, no sugar hot chocolate. I put nutrasweet and low fat coffee creamer in it and it tastes wonderful and fills me up. I try to stay away from trigger foods such as potatoes. I crave starchy foods! I also substitute beans for meat dishes a couple of times a week.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
Drink a full glass of water before each meal.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
Eat vegetable and whole grain-based non-creamy soup either as a meal (for lunch) or as a first course before your dinner entree. Such soups are inexpensive to make, have lots of healthy ingredients, and are warm and filling. Thus, you are satisfied sooner and will eat less higher-calorie items later in the meal.
January 4th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
It’s all about portion control! I’m trying!
January 4th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
Drink a glass of water 15 minutes before eating a meal to fill you up and help you eat less.
January 4th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
I have lost and gained and lost and gained over the last 20 years. What finally helped me was to write down exactly what I had planned to eat that day, and then doing my best to stick to it. Also, nothing is more important than exercise and water (sorry!) to make you feel good about yourself. You’ll feel like an athlete long before you become one!
January 4th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
Eat an apple 1 hour before meal.
January 4th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
My diet tip is “don’t consider yourself on a diet! It’s a change of life style that will help you lose weight and keep it off. Eat lots of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and lean protein”.
January 4th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
always drink lots of water
January 4th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
I have switched from soda to water, and take it with me everywhere
January 4th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
I don’t keep sweets and junk food around the house. If I feel like having something naughty I go out for it.
January 4th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
Exercise is my secret weapon when dieting. It’s amazing how a little cardio can give me the added boost I need to stick to my diet!
Thanks and Happy 2009!
January 4th, 2009 at 5:51 pm
drink lots of water and and eat salad or soup before the meal It fills you up then use a salad or smaller plate for your meal
January 4th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
My favorite diet tip would be to stay away from soda. Both regular and diet sodas are horrible for you and can hinder weight loss.
January 4th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
Add vegetables to everything!!It fills you up and keeps you satisfied a lot longer
January 4th, 2009 at 6:31 pm
I eat popcorn as a snack. I put very little butter or seasoning on it. It is great fiber and makes me feel full.
January 4th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
I did research as to what body type I am and found out what my body takes well to (dairy makes you bloated). I also stick to a lot of biblical food requirements and it has given me a great amount of energy as well as helped my weight stay consistent. Another thing I do is eat many little meals throughout the day. I’ve been 135 lbs for 5 years now so….

January 4th, 2009 at 9:06 pm
To help speed up your metabolism make sure that during your waking hours you are actually upright on your feet walking for at least 10 consecutive minutes each hour. This is suppose to help increase your metabolism.
January 4th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
Cutting back on carbs, especially those found in wheat-containing products like bread, pasta, and (of course) cake, has worked wonders for me in the past. The trick is staying with the low-carb diet once the weight is off. Good luck! I know just how you feel.
January 4th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
My diet tip is to never give up. If you eat something bad, start over right away. If you make good choices 75% of the time, then you are going to lose some weight.
January 4th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
Brush, floss and mouthwash (as if you’re going to bed) at around 7 p.m. each night. A fresh clean mouth prevents you from wanting to eat for the rest of the evening.

January 4th, 2009 at 10:35 pm

January 5th, 2009 at 12:09 am
I listen to myself. I watch when I am eating, and when I start to feel satisfied I stop. Plus, I drink a ton of water. Another huge thing that has helped me, is to realize what it is that makes me eat more. What my triggers are. What I can do to be happy besides eating. Just keep moving and don’t give up. Good luck to everyone!!

My best diet tip is to resist the junk at the store. It is a lot easier to say no once an the store than to say no every day
January 5th, 2009 at 6:57 am
I eat sugar free jello or fruit except for dinner, and then eat a proportioned meal. I lost 135# for my kids weddings two years ago using this method.
January 5th, 2009 at 8:24 am
I use a list at the grocery store to avoid bad choices.
January 5th, 2009 at 8:38 am
Eat organic. I switched my diet to about 75% organic foods and went down 2 sizes in 2 months without changing anything else!
January 5th, 2009 at 9:00 am
Make a vow to always sit down at a table to eat, even if you are alone. Set the table, even if for one place. Relax when eating.

Try to find healthier substitutes for some of the things you eat. A whole grain roll instead of a white roll. Order green beans for the side item instead of Mac&Cheese. Unsweetened tea or water instead of the sugary soda or Sweet Tea. Just keep on making the small, concious choices to make your meals a little healthier.
January 5th, 2009 at 11:14 am
I eat slowly
January 5th, 2009 at 11:44 am
I like sugar free chewing gum to chew on when I am craving snacks. Often if you chew it for at least 30 minutes the craving subsides.
January 5th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
I try to stop eating before I really feel full. This helps me to control the amounts I eat at each meal!
cjnedrow@gmail.com
January 5th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
If you eat the minimum recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables every day, you will stay pretty full and it reduces the tendency to crave sweets.
January 5th, 2009 at 12:53 pm

January 5th, 2009 at 1:28 pm

January 5th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
My best diet tip was to eliminate all soda products!
January 5th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
I cut my portions in half. This way if I want something sweet I can still have it, just less of it. And it let’s me eat more often!
January 5th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
About 3 or 4 in the afternoon I have a light non-fat yogurt—the really thick and creamy kind. I had been buying cheaper yogurt and had to force myself to eat it, but since switching I haven’t had this problem. I now feel like I’m having the richest, most decadent fruit creme. It satisfies my sweet tooth and gives me an extra boost of calcium (for just 100 calories).
January 5th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
Use a smaller plate and you can trick yourself into thinking you have more on your plate than you really do.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
Play all you can with your kids – you will burn tons of calories and enjoy yourself in the process!
January 5th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
My tip is Presentation: Nothing worse than a boring diet meal on a boring plate. Treat yourself like you’re at a restaurant — focus on the presentation, add garnish, and use fancy dishes. For example, the cosmopolitan glasses (my fave) for this giveaway would make a unique presentation for soups, desserts (SF/FF, of course), and/or something like ceviche.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Only eat things with 10 or less ingredients. The more ingredients there are, the more the calories and fat adds up.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Take small portions and don’t go for seconds!
January 5th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Have someone to go on a diet with you. It is more fun if you can also go for walks together. Eat smaller portions, that is the key.
January 5th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
Go to your kids practices and help. You would be so surprised how much exercise you get.
January 5th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
94% fat-free popcorn has been the greatest help to me when losing weight the past year and a half.

It’s all about the water
January 5th, 2009 at 6:06 pm
Instead of ice cream, I have been eating greek style yogurt with a hand full of dark chocolate chips when I have a sweet craving. It is rich, delish and full of protein compared to regular full fat. So my advice is try to pinpoint what your snack weakness is- and find the healthiest version of it that you can when you indulge.
January 5th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
Eat only when you’re truly hungry. If you have an absolute desire for something, go ahead and treat yourself in moderation. Otherwise you’re bound to binge.

January 5th, 2009 at 7:13 pm
I think it is smart to not starve yourself, but enjoy things you like in small portions. Thanks
January 5th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
I make small changes in my diet. Drastic ones never stick for me. For instance, I stopped buying ground beef and now buy much lower in fat ground turkey. I also buy more fruits and veggies. Thanks!
January 5th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
lots of water with lemon and smaller portions
January 5th, 2009 at 8:00 pm
I make vegetables the main part of my meal. I limit my meat portions to the size of a deck of cards. I also use my steamer a lot in preparing my meals. I started making hummus and use it as a sandwich spread on whole wheat flat bread for breakfast. It’s a delicious beakfast. My other favorite breakfast is a tbls. of natural peanut butter and sliced banana sandwich on whole wheat flat bread. It’s nutritious and filling.
January 5th, 2009 at 8:42 pm
lighter and smaller meals are the way to go! Thanks for a great giveaway

Move more and eat less.
January 5th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
Read all your labels while grocery shopping, checking for content like fat, sodium, corn syryp, and other ingredients you may wish to avoid. Buy only what passes muster. That way, when you get hungry at home and start rooting around for something to eat, you will encounter only foods you’ve preselected for their fit into your diet plan.
January 5th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
I buy frozen (diet) entres for lunch. It’s automatic portion control. But I put the heated food on to a real plate. It just looks more appetizing than eating it out of a cardboard or plastic box!

Stress put weight on???? How stress taking weight off – evacuation for fires….. land slippage….walking away from a house. And then living at neighbors. Ah but walking is always the best stress buster and eliminates the need to eat to calm down or helps you digest food correctly. Check the thyroid. Eliminate adding salt at the table. Listen to classical music – very calming. Be thankful.

January 6th, 2009 at 11:02 am
To stick with it, KISS (Keep It Simple, Sweetie)! Plan balanced meals. Pay attention to portion sizes. Consciously increase your exercise each day. And select one diet area at a time for “improvement” – e.g., first add servings of vegetables and fruits, then reduce fat intake, etc.
January 6th, 2009 at 11:13 am
Cut One Soda a day out of your diet, This will add up to 109 cups of sugar a year !!!!
January 6th, 2009 at 11:28 am
My favorite diet tip is to keep a water bottle with you all day long. The more water you drink the more you flush out your system and the less hungry you feel in between meals.
January 6th, 2009 at 11:34 am
Start each meal with a soup (not creamy!). It will fill you up so you don’t eat as much!
January 6th, 2009 at 11:37 am
Sometimes when I feel hungry, I’m really just thirsty and a large glass of water keeps me from eating something I don’t really need.
January 6th, 2009 at 11:42 am
Since I weighed today, I am now writing down everything I eat each day. Apparently snacking can really add up without being aware of the extra calories. Also adding at least 20 minutes of exercise per day. While I have a bad knee, there are ways to modify exercises.
January 6th, 2009 at 11:53 am

Tip: Portion Control. You don’t have to pile everything on your plate and you don’t have to clean your plate as your Mom always made you do. If you must fil up with something, do it with vegetables.

Water is always the key to any diet plan…. lots of it to flush your system.
January 6th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
The secret to dieting is smaller portions. Your stomach is only so big, as big as your fist as a matter of fact. So when you eat a portion larger than your fist you are stretching out those muscles, which makes you want to eat more and more. Just cut your portion sizes down slowly and you will begin to see the difference.

I always have a bag of nuts still in their shells. Any time I feel like snacking, I get the bag and the nutcracker. They’re good for your health, and I don’t eat to many because it takes time to crack them.
January 6th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
I subscribed to your monthly newsletter a long time ago and have been enjoying it. I particularly love the great recipes. Keep them coming! Another diet tip I use is not to let myself get overly hungry. I try to plan to have healthy snacks so I’m not tempted to eat a high calorie snack. Lowfat string cheese is one of my favorites. I also found recipes for my own salad dressings. I didn’t like any of the ones on the market that were for dieters. They are olive oil based and that’s a healthy fat. I didn’t like all the preservatives in the bottled kind.

Portions are important. Exercise too.
January 6th, 2009 at 8:25 pm
Round out each meal with large servings of freebie vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and all kinds of salad vegetables.
Thank you!

No Soda, diet or other wise. but my biggest tip is to talk and think about something else besides food. To me these are the two biggest tips going. This coming from a person who weighs in twice a day.
January 6th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Toothpaste. Whenever I get a craving usually for a dessert, I brush my teeth first. It won’t taste good if I eat food after I brush. Then, I wait about half hour when the toothpaste taste wears off. If I still have the craving, then I go for it. But, hopefully, the craving has gone away or I am busy doing something else and forget about it.
Thanks!

I have two tips: eat a protein in the morning to jump start your metabolism. The other is to try not to eat after five o’clock in the evening. I knew someone who lost a lot of weight by not eating into the night as we tend to do with our erratic schedules.

My diet tip is to try and expend at least 300 to 500 calories more than I have taken in for the day. The weight loss may be slower this way, but it is easier to keep off to. So if you have a gotta eat alot day, you’ll have to have to be exercising more that day too. Yes, counting calories is not easy, but once you get in the habit it gets easier.

Whenever we have too much fruit that is about to become overripe–which would eventually become rotten–we cut it and trim it…then place the pieces in a container in the freezer. Eg. pieces of apples, bananas, melons, berries, etc. Then as the days and weeks go by, we will add the frozen pieces of fruit to a variety of dishes: like cereal, yogurt, ice-cream, servings of other fresh fruits like strawberries, blueberries, etc., (or you could add the frozen pieces of fruit to servings of canned fruits). The key to reducing calories is to use the fruit to replace sugar, syrup, and other high calorie toppings, frostings, etc.
January 6th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
Eat most anything I want but in moderation. I do eat lots of fruits and vegetables.
January 6th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
Although drinking water is a best bet to shed calories, it gets dull to drink it with meals. Sometimes I subsitute water with a yummy-flavored product called Vitamin Water. It has sugar in it, but just enough to taste. It’s not as loaded with sugar as soda or juice, since it is still mostly water! For those of us who loathe diet soda or other sugarless drinks, sometimes including a small dose of real sugar helps curb our appetite for truly sugary/fatty sweets and desserts, and is the best bet for safe dieting in the long-term. Thanks and I hope this helps!

I mix ricotta cheese with lemon flavoring and splenda and it’s very low in carbs and fat and great tasting for my sweet tooth.

Massage THerapy. Relaxation and less stress means less eating and less cortizal which leads to belly fat or can lead to. Go to a school clinic – less money.
January 6th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
I try to eat more protein – it keeps my appetite at bay for longer periods of time than carbs.
January 6th, 2009 at 11:21 pm

January 6th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

Don’t be around people who want your food, you’ll be less likely to overeat because you feel like it’ll be taken away from you.
An explanation: My mother is one of these people. It doesn’t matter if she just ate a full meal and you’ve had nothing to eat all day , if you walk by her with food she wants to know what it is and 9 times out of 10 she’ll want you to give her at least half.
The one time she was visiting relatives for a few months , I lost about 20 pounds without even trying to diet. Once I was once again forced to live with her , I gained it back and more.
January 6th, 2009 at 11:51 pm

Drink herbal tea like chamomile without sugar instead of snacking at night. The warmth will help the “hungries” and if it gets too bad just go to bed early to keep from eating.

Be honest with yourself. Even if no one sees your “cheats” they still affect you. So take ownership of what you eat.
January 7th, 2009 at 3:24 am
Do not totally deprive yourself of your favorite foods. I allow myself a bite of ooey gooey chocolate cake or a few potato chips before my cravings become obsessive.
Thank you for the opportunity to win!

Drink only water or other drinks with no calories. Drink a glass of water about 5 minutes before a meal. It makes you feel full so you eat less. And never eat after 7PM.

Use your diet time to experiment with healthful foods you may not have tried before. Seek out new-to-you low-calorie, low-fat, high-nutrition foods to add to your meals. Whether or not you find any new favorites, you will maintain interest in your foods and won’t fall victim to the same-old-same-old dieting rut. Good luck!
